Have you ever met someone and you could just tell right away that they were SUPER special? Maybe even serving a much bigger purpose here on Earth?
Well, I met three women recently and I couldn't get to the blog fast enough to tell you about them! I connected instantly with these three incredible ladies. I could have spent hours chatting with them. What they are doing is so amazing. They have such... HEART.
KC, you need to know about the owners of KC Art Angels -- they're truly on a mission.
What is KC Art Angels Gallery & Studio?
Three vivacious women, Julaire Sterbach, Steph Harville, and Christie Couville, who Strive to revitalize the arts in our community through workshops for all ages, outreach programs, mentorship for new artists, and a space for local artists to maximize profits for their work. We also strive to bring light and support to local charities. Our overall goal is to bring focus and understanding to many causes, while simultaneously sharing beauty with the world through art.
We are a 501c3 tax exempt, gallery and studio.
We currently have 22 artists in our gallery, offering everything from fine art, ceramics, jewelry, mixed-media, and artisan home decor.
We hold workshops and had a blast holding summer camps this year, offering three kiddos scholarships for week long programs!
We work with the Lenexa Arts Counsel in hosting a Slam Poetry Open Mic night every second Saturday of the month, open free to the public from 7-9. Folks from all ages and walks of life come together and share their original or favorite poetry.
How we met...
We all live within two minutes of one another! We met through mutual acquaintances and through the Shawnee Mission Dog Park, last January. Coincidentally, Julaire's son and Christie's daughter went to high school together and almost went to Homecoming together.
How we got started...
We all knew immediately that we were like minded. We love creating art and sharing it with the world. We also lovethe idea of giving back and bringing people together. Art is such a wonderful way to bring people together, and to express oneself. It lifts people up, and we wanted people to experience that by seeing art and creating their own art. We originally talked about holding monthly art shows at different venues and incorporate a different charity each time. Then, we amazingly, came upon our gallery space, and things just came together quickly.
Who we are...
We each have our own story about how art has help us in our lives. Julaire has a daughter with an autoimmune disorder, and a son who was stabbed in an attempted mugging incident a couple of years ago. Christie was engaged to her fiancé from Liberty, MO, who died by suicide just before they were planning on getting married. She also has a son with mild Asperger's syndrome and a sister with Down's Syndrome. Steph suffers from chronic migraines and also has a couple of autoimmune disorders which affects her ability to work full-time. All three of us turned to art as an outlet to help us work through the those challenges, and all of us wanted to use our art to spread awareness. We then began meeting people who do the same, and the rest is history... not so long ago history.
Our purpose is to revitalize the arts in our community through workshops for all ages, outreach programs, mentorship for new artists, and a space for local artists to maximize profits for their work. We also strive to bring light and support to many facets of the human condition and local charities. Our overall goal is to bring focus and understanding to many causes, while simultaneously sharing beauty with the world through art.
What's coming up...
Lots of workshops! Including a women's empowerment workshop through mixed media art. We also have one scaled for young teens. We are super excited about hosting the Old Town Lenexa Artisan Fair on October 15th, along with the Salem Lutheran Church.
- 60 booths of artists from all over the KC area
- Beer garden showcasing local artisan beers
- Maps cold brew coffee
- Coincides with the Lenexa Chili Challenge
- Art demonstrations - ceramics, pyrography (burning images into wood)
- Kids rock painting - be a part of Lenexa Rocks
How we give back...
In addition to what is listed above, we mentor several artists who may not have other means of income due to several different types of disabilities. We enjoy giving several Kansas City artists a place to showcase their work, in an environment that allows them to benefit from a high commission rate. We also enjoy working with the City of Lenexa to embrace the spoken word, and hopefully more performing arts in the near future. We look forward to selling ceramic bowls during the Lenexa Chili Challenge to raise money for Harvesters. We've held local bake sales with our summer campers to raise money for Kitty City. We really enjoy doing whatever we can to help our community, and we hope to expand to other areas around the Kansas City Metro area in the near future.
