Mind + Body: How to Make Time for Self-Care
Written by: Allison Swan
Self-care is defined as making time to take care of yourself without feeling guilty. Methods can range widely, with activities like reading, yoga, or a relaxing bubble bath. Taking a moment for yourself so you can hit the reset button is only part of the battle--happy hour ends up being less than happy because your mind is elsewhere. How can you binge watch your favorite Netflix series stress-free with those last couple of emails you didn't get to hanging over your head, or that pile of laundry lurking next to your TV? Let your self-care time shine without stressing about your small to-do list so your "me time" can be as effective as possible with these tips.
Start by creating a plan. Write down everything that really needs to get done in your planner and work it into your schedule. Pencil in time to complete each task and stick to it. Choose specific days to call and make appointments, stop by the bank, organize your filing cabinet, and purge your closet so you don't have to deal with everything at once. For reoccurring tasks, completing them at the same time each week will get you into a solid routine.
Treat your to-do list like it's your job and you will be done in no time. After you've completed everything, you'll know exactly when you will be completely free to relax and reward yourself with the satisfaction of a job well done.
Form healthy habits by repeating all steps. Having everything on paper and being able to cross things off your to-do list will clear your mind so you won’t be worrying about missing a thing. Once you know how good it feels to not be stressing about running out of contact lenses or a late credit card bill, you will enjoy your self-care "me time" so much more.
