NYE in KC: Suggestions for You and Your Family
Written by: Jen Johnson
If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve in Kansas City, there are options that run the gamut from family-friendly to “get a babysitter, we’re going out!”
Let’s start with a couple of family-friendly options.
The Kansas City Zoo has Zoo Year’s Eve on Dec. 31st from 10AM-2PM. According to their website, you can “Ring in the new year Zoo-style! Penguins, polar bears, and many more animals will enjoy festive enrichment items. Dance to the beats of our interactive DJ and make a noise maker before you jump in our photo booth to capture a memory!” The event is included with zoo admission.
On Dec. 30th, Wonderscope in Shawnee will celebrate WonderEve with music from Mr. Stinky Feet (look up his music if you don’t know him—so fun), and all the other goodies that come with a New Year’s party, but with kid-friendly hours of 9AM-noon!
On the more grown up end of NYE, The Uptown Theater will have a party that spills out over five rooms and five open bars! If you saw Smithville native Casi Joy on NBC’s The Voice last year, you know how amazing she is. She’ll be at The Uptown performing live, and they’ll also have a Craft Beer Lounge and Laser Light Show, among other fun stuff.
It’ll be a New Year’s Swingin’ Eve at Union Station! According to the Union Station website, “Swing in the new year at the biggest celebration in Kansas City, featuring award-winning Dave Stephens and the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra 7 (“KCJO7”) at historic Union Station. Your ticket gets it all - admission, live music, party favors, drinks, hot appetizers and midnight champagne toast.”
If you’re like me, and you’ll probably be asleep long before midnight, KC Bier (near 79th and Wornall Rd) has a daytime celebration where all ages are welcome. Join them on Dec. 31st from 11AM-5PM. They’ll have live music with Bram from 3-5, a short traditional German film (A Dinner For One) playing at 4, spiced #ApfelCider and Jelly Doughnut toast right at 5:01(when the ball drops in Germany), and then they’ll shut down the building shortly after.
