App to Love: Digit

This past weekend while I was out with friends, we started chatting about saving money and how expensive life is and how it’s becoming harder and harder to actually save. While some people are excellent at sticking to budgets, I’ve found I don’t do as well as I’d like to. That’s when two of my friends cited Digit, an app on their phones, as an easy way to save without thinking twice about it.
Here’s how it works: Digit is an app that connects to your bank account and slowly starts taking money out of it for a “rainy day” fund. The amount it transfers from your account to the fund is based on your spending habits and can differ each time (sometimes it’s 20 cents and sometimes it’s $12). Some days it won’t even take anything out! In fact, they monitor it closely so that the have a no-overdraft guarantee. It does it craftily enough that when I signed up, I didn’t even notice the money was gone. My favorite part? You can set new goals that allow you to save for different things like rent or an upcoming trip.
Once you want to withdraw the money, you simply request the app to return the money to your bank account from your digit account and it transfers it back into your checking account.
