Did you know that rocking your health with your friends will help you reach your weight loss and healthy lifestyle goals? (Not to mention make it more fun!)  What if I gave you a few simple ideas that would make getting healthy a new “thing” that you do with your friends?

Do you exercise and eat right a lot of the time, but when you get together with your friends, that all goes out the window?  I hear ya.  That’s what I used to do.  I am a very social person and love to hang out with my peeps.  I love to go to restaurants, host gatherings at my house, and meet up for happy hours.  (Yes, Nutritionists do that!)  But now I know what to do so that I don’t sabotage myself when I am with my friends.

Social gatherings often mean that we (over) indulge in delicious food and cocktails.  That’s just the way it is.  How about putting a new twist on it?   If you want to create and stick with healthy eating habits, you need to make them the “new normal”. 

Here are 3 ideas to get your friends in on the healthy game with you, so that you can all do it together, which will create a fun, supportive environment, and your friends will THANK you for inspiring them to create new, healthier habits. 

1. Host a Healthy Potluck – Ask everyone to bring a healthy food item (i.e., something that is not cheese-based ;-)).  I bet you’ll realize that you won’t sacrifice flavor and that you’ll love trying some new things that you otherwise may not try to cook or eat.  Plus, half the fun of potlucks is the surprise of all the things you get to taste that you didn’t have to make yourself!

2.  Take a cooking class together that focuses on cooking healthy meals.  Right here in Kansas City, there are a few options.  You can check out , (look for the “Heart-Healthy” classes) and  These are not only a FUN thing to do with friends, but will also get your creative juices (no pun intended) flowing for other healthy recipe ideas.  

3.  Sign up for a 5k or another event to do with a friend or two. There are 5k races all over the city, all the time.  Check out to see a full list of upcoming races.  And remember… you don’t have to set any land-speed records.  It’s about getting out there, moving and having fun!  If walking or jogging isn’t your thing, check out options for cycling clubs, leagues for team sports, taking tennis lessons… whatever interests you. J 

Getting your friends and family in on the benefits of your new, healthy habits is a win-win!  Social gatherings are supposed to be FUN.  The focus can still be on the food (if a potluck, cooking class, or something similar), and can be things that are delicious, good for everyone and that won’t sabotage all of your other healthy habits and efforts.
