Food: Avoid Getting 'Hangry' -- Prepare Like a Boss
Written by: Jessica Kimbrell for Real Life Nutrition, LLC
I’m sure you’ve heard the Boy Scout motto 'Always be prepared', and that old adage, 'Preparation is key'. In applying those to our crazy busy lives, how GREAT would it feel to always be prepared to make healthier food choices when you’re on the go? To know you have some quality 'arsenal' to get you through the day -- when the day is unexpectedly turned upside-down?
We live in a time when we seem to have NO time. We’re constantly on the go, running here, there and everywhere. Sometimes we forget to eat or we find ourselves STARVING and we just have to get SOMETHING in our stomach. This is a key moment… do you have something in our car or purse to eat? Something that isn’t crusted to the seat or that hasn’t been hiding under the floormat for several months? Or do you have to go buy something, and figure out where to go to do it? By this point, you’re hangry. No bueno.
Here is my secret to avoid getting hangry and making healthy choices when on-the-go – a M.R.F.K. That stands for 'Mobile Readiness Food Kit'. Some call it their 'Grab ‘n Go Kit' or 'Mobile Snack Saver'. Whatever you call it, it is basically a lifesaver. Maybe that’s what I should call mine!
There are a lot of great-tasting, healthy options you can include in your MRFK. I keep mine in the car, and some items I throw in my purse. Here is a list of some things that my family and I like: bottled water, trail mix, turkey jerky, mixed nuts (preferably low sodium or raw/unsalted), protein bars like Fit Crunch bars or Think Thin bars. Bonus tip: if you use a small cooler that you can keep in the car, put in some reusable ice packs so that you can keep perishable items in it for the day, such as: baby carrots, sliced veggies (bell peppers, celery), grapes, apples, bananas. You get the idea. Anything that is easy to eat in the car and on-the-go.
For the days and moments when life is chaotic, it is SO great to have things handy to tide you over until your next meal. You can DO this. You’ll thank yourself for putting it together, and it will save you time (from having to stop to get something), money (from not having to buy marked-up snacks at a convenience store or at a fast food restaurant) and from getting hangry (grrrrrr!). It will also keep you on track with your health goals since you’ll have healthy items readily available. Plus, if you have kids, you’ll be a hero for always having snacks available in the car!
