Style: Escaping a Fashion Rut
Written by: Maki Moussavi
Are you stuck in a rut? Maybe feeling early or mid-life crisis-y? Really need something to change, but you're not sure how to get started?
So often, our discontentment with circumstances has to do with stagnation. We pride ourselves on stick-to-it-ness. How often do you hear someone brag about the longevity of things? 'I've been at this job for 15 years!' or 'I've been married for 10 years!' and 'I was born in this town! Never lived anywhere else!'
While in and of itself consistency of circumstances isn't necessarily negative, what we don't often consider is how the sameness of our daily existence can make us feel like we've driven into a ditch and are just cruising there without the right tires to let us drive up and out of it. Boredom and apathy, low energy emotions seep into the rest of your life and suddenly you feel as if other things have been painted with the same dull shade of beige. Your reactions to the same-y same details becomes... 'meh'. It's hard to feel energized or excited.
By now, you might be saying 'yes, but what does that have to do with how I dress?' I'll tell you.
What you wear, how you look and how you feel are all ways to INSTANTLY change your energy.
If you've been applying the same principles of longevity to your wardrobe, chances are you've been wearing the same dang stuff for a long time. You probably have a closet full of things you've worn for years (whether they fit or not) because for some reason you think clothing is an investment that will be wasted if you toss out 'perfectly good' items that no longer excite you.
This is where people get it wrong. Clothing is an investment in YOU, not in IT. I don't care how much you spend on that sweet pair of jeans -- it won't be long before you're ready to move on from them. They'll be outdated, you'll be over them, they won't fit -- whatever the reason, they aren't meant to be a lasting investment. Does that mean you shouldn't buy them? NO. If you look and feel amazing in them, you absolutely should.
You have to be your number one priority. How you feel about you on a daily basis should be of the utmost importance to you. If you're not there yet and you want to be, let's chat.
