Beauty: Make-Up Starts with a Great Skincare Regimen

Beauty: Make-Up Starts with a Great Skincare Regimen

I have been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and have dabbled in just about everything from working for different beauty lines, to runway shows. I have also been given the opportunity to work with local and national celebrities.

Although the beauty industry has changed immensely from when I first started, the one thing that remains the same is that we are still looking for the 'bottle of youth'. Yes, I can 'beat or slay' a face. But, your face will never be at its best no matter how much makeup you apply if you don’t have healthy skin.

I am always amazed at how my clients think it’s a secret that no one has told them about keeping their skin looking young, flawless, and youthful. The secret is… wait for it... a great skincare regimen!

Clients are impressed that my age and skin don’t match. In other words, I look younger than I am. I'll be 45 in a few days and I am always mistaken for being in my 30’s. Trust me I am not complaining. I do embrace my age, but I also embrace those compliments! I work hard at my skin regimen and I take it seriously. Yes, I have great genes and that helps -- but I think I have a better skincare regimen.

I thought it would be fun to give you some of my recommendations for 'best products' to fight father time from getting the best of us!

First, you must know that your skin talks to you. I have always said that it has an attitude and will tell you what it likes and dislikes, all we need to do is listen. Well, I can tell you that all skin is telling us that we need a true skincare system. Now, I am not just talking soap and water but a true system. I must admit, in my early adult life I cleaned with Dove soap and water and my skin was beautiful. But, I was in my 20's and that’s all I had to do -- at the time. Nothing is wrong with Dove soap -- I use it today, but just on my body. The industry has made it easier to achieve skincare goals by giving options on figuring out what is best for the skin. For example, you can even go online and take skin care quizzes so that you don’t have to go to a store. But as a professional, I suggest you go into the store just so you have an expert actually looking at and analyzing your skin.

A go-to brand that I absolutely love is Kiehl’s. They have such a wide range of products for normal to problematic skin. Also, they can give you a skin analysis in the store. Kiehl's is scientifically formulated so that it will restore the skin barrier for healthier more radiant, younger looking skin. Many times I start out my younger clients with this brand. Their formulas can tackle some of the toughest skincare issues! Kiehl’s has been around for a long time and it will remain one of the greatest skincare brands we know.

Another brand that is a 'go-to', especially if you have skin challenges -- DERMAdoctor. This brand is locally owned here in the Kansas City Metro area. Dr. Audrey Kunin is a board-certified dermatologist, author, clinician, educator, television personality and CEO of DERMAdoctor, Inc. Believing that nature and medicine can work synergistically, Dr. Kunin has created many clinically proven, patent-pending formulations that target a number of overlooked yet common skin concerns. It really is a problem-solving solution for skin concerns that range from anti-aging to occasional blemishes to eczema. I love their tag line because it is so true, 'DERMAdoctor is truly just what the skin doctor ordered'.

Lastly, but certainly not least of the brands that I love to use for my mature skin is Erno Laszlo.  Dr. Laszlo has taken care of some of the most famous clients since 1927. His list includes Greta Garbo, Jackie O, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. In fact, Audrey Hepburn said, 'I owe 50% of my beauty to my mother and the other 50% to Erno Laszlo'. He left a legacy of world-class treatments that blend cutting-edge ingredients to help you look like the stars and obtain that same glamour they have. In other words, help you age gracefully! Who doesn’t desire that?

Like I mentioned earlier, skincare is so important when you want to have a beautiful makeup face. Our skin is exposed to so much pollution and environmental influences that the right skincare regimen will keep your skin looking healthy, radiant and youthful. It will also help protect against damaging sun rays that can cause cancer. Skincare is not just for beauty but also for protection.
