Experience: Plaza Art Fair
Written by: Allison Swan
The Plaza Art Fair is Kansas City's unofficial welcome to the fall season!
The 86th annual fair anticipates a crowd of over 250,000 people and will span nine city blocks featuring 240 artists, three live music stages, and over 25 restaurant booths.
The Plaza Art Fair started in 1932 as a promotion to draw shoppers to the area to lift their spirits during the Great Depression. 90 artists displayed their paintings by leaning them against trees and benches on the southwest corner of Nichols Road and Central, which is now the location of Tiffany & Co. Paintings were priced anywhere from $1 to $10. The event was so successful that they agreed it should continue. The fair has evolved over the years, growing larger and becoming a top-ranked, national art event.
Enjoy this weekend of people celebrating art and each other on September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
